Choosing a style based on looks rather than use case

Ignoring the replacement battery price

Check the specific model's replacement battery cost before buying — it's one of the largest costs an owner will eventually face.

Assuming homeowner's or renter's insurance covers it fully

Check your policy's bicycle theft sub-limit specifically — many cap coverage well below an e-bike's replacement cost.

Glossary

The words that get used as if everyone already knows them.

Class 1, 2, 3

The legal categories most US states use to define e-bikes by top assisted speed and whether a throttle is present — they determine where you can legally ride, not how good a bike is.

Watt-hour (Wh)

The unit battery capacity is measured in — a fixed physical quantity that's a more reliable comparison point between models than an advertised range figure.

Torque (Nm)

The rotational force a motor applies — the number that actually determines hill-climbing and cargo-hauling ability, more so than headline wattage.

Pedal assist (PAS)

The system that adds motor power in proportion to your own pedaling, as opposed to a throttle that can propel the bike without pedaling.

Cadence sensor

A simpler assist system that detects the pedals turning and applies a preset assist level, regardless of how hard you're pedaling.

Torque sensor

A more advanced assist system that measures your actual pedaling force and scales assist proportionally, for a more natural feel.

Hub motor

A motor built into the wheel hub, delivering power directly to that wheel independent of the bike's gearing.

Mid-drive motor

A motor mounted at the pedal crank that pushes power through the bike's own gears, generally more efficient on varied terrain.

Battery Management System (BMS)

The circuit that monitors and protects battery cells during charging and discharging — a critical safety component, not an optional extra.

Charge cycle

One full discharge-and-recharge of a battery, whether completed in one sitting or accumulated across partial charges.

UL 2849

A recognized safety standard covering the electrical drive system of e-bikes, including the battery — worth checking for on any listing.

Voltage sag

A temporary drop in the voltage a battery can supply under heavy load, such as a long climb, which can reduce peak power exactly when it's needed most.
